Fake pills containing fentanyl kill Texas youth

Across Texas and the entire United States, more and more young people are dying from overdoses of Fentanyl. It’s a problem that affects more families each year, and if the trends continue, fentanyl could kill more people in 2021 than ever before.

Former DEA Special Agent Derek Maltz joined the Chad Hasty Show on Monday afternoon to discuss the drug flow crossing the border and how the increase in fentanyl deaths may be linked to the crisis on along the border, Mexican drug cartels and Chinese criminals.

Maltz told the Chad Hasty Show that more and more fentanyl is crossing the border:

We have a crisis and we need action to end it. Look at what CBP seized at the border for the first nine months. 8,500 pounds of fentanyl. Last year for the whole year it was only 4,776 pounds. I’m just saying, but remember that just 1 kilogram, or 2.2 pounds, can kill 500,000 people.

According to Maltz, this is different from the opioid crisis. Younger people try pills like Xanax, Valium and Oxycodone that they find in their parents or friends. Maltz said that with young people self-medicating, they end up trying to buy drugs on the streets and on social media.

Maltz said that often these pills are fake and imported by Mexican drug cartels, who mix the pills with fentanyl.

According to a story from KXAN, a sergeant with the Organized Crime Unit of the Cedar Park Police Department said this has been the busiest year with fake pills:

Justin Miller, a sergeant with the Cedar Park Police Department’s Organized Crime Unit, said he has been on drugs for eight years and the past 18 months have been the busiest he has ever seen. Counterfeit pills containing fentanyl are one of the main drivers of this increase in drug crime, he said.

Maltz told the Chad Hasty Show that until the border is secure, we can expect to see an increase in this type of drug crossing the border.
