The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) are back, but this time with a fashion twist. Among the 8-day events was a fashion show, featuring the finalists of the Design for the Stars competition.
One word to accurately describe the unique looks that have taken to the runway is “gagged.” Every outfit got everyone excited and tried hard not to shed a tear of pure fashion joy in the face of creativity and detail.
The runway flourished with various fashion trends, sometimes making us wonder if we were transported to a world where style is the norm. Here are some of our favorite trends:
A rule of thumb when it comes to dresses: you can never go wrong with ruffles. The designers knew this by sending gorgeous ruffle-like dresses on the run, giving us a healthy dose of dramatic flair and one-hundred-percent campiness.
Royalty remained a theme that shone brightly on the runway. From crowns to a modern take on tailcoats, the London Regency era came to life at the AMVCA 8 fashion show. It was almost like a London-Lagos Fashion Week crossover.
Whoever said hair should only be worn on the head certainly didn’t catch a glimpse of sexy and confident Yemi Alade as she walked in a black dress with red braids. Changing the hair narrative, Lush caught our eye with her hot pink dresses and elaborate masterpieces.
The next time you hear someone say, “This runway was waisted for fashion forces,” they might be referring to the AMVCA 8 Fashion Show. Aside from discomfort, corsets are widely known for the beauty they add to a garment, giving more shape to the silhouette.
Brightly colored dresses were accompanied by corsets, which were a staple in some designer looks.
Who’s in the garden? No one except gorgeous dresses with bold floral accessories and floral print suits. Designers have given us what can only be called a ‘spring meets glam’ moment, and it’s safe to say we’re living for it.
If there’s one lesson to be learned from the AMVCA track, it’s the stones’ incredible ability to transform a basic look into an elevated, expensive look.
Stoning dresses when they’re poorly made can be disastrous, but these designers made it work, offering a glimpse of luxury through their garments.
Flamboyant is not enough to describe the nature of sleeves on the catwalk. It almost seemed like the designers were taking the saying “Go big or go home” to heart, as the exaggerated yet stylish sleeves stole the show.
