The Greatest Outfits of Fashion History: Anne Hathaway’s Underrated Oscars Dress

There are some really great celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you’re desperately trying to recreate at home. In ‘Great outfits in fashion history‘, the editors of Fashionista revisit their all-time favorite obscenes.

It’s safe to say that Anne Hathaway is enjoying something of a renaissance, and the world is ready to apologize for being really mean to her in the run-up to her 2013 Oscar win for “Les Miserables.”

What I think we need to reconsider in the wake of CANnie – that would be Anne in Cannes – is how we think about Hathaway’s red carpet style over the years. And there’s one look in particular we can start with: the much-maligned dress she wore to the 2013 Oscars.

At the time, the internet was laughing at this dress because the seam at the bust ended in a place that made it look like it was going for a #freethenipple moment – who, whatever!!! This pale pink Prada sheath was not the first choice of the evening; Apparently, there was a planned Alexander McQueen dress that had to be scrapped when it was discovered that co-star Amanda Seyfried was wearing something incredibly similar.

But honestly, in my opinion, this dress was just ahead of its time. It’s more than stunning in its simplicity, from the shade of pink that perfectly flatters Hathaway’s skin tone to the sleek lines it creates from every angle. The back has a gorgeous strappy detail that ends in an oversized bow at her waist, creating a slightly sexy yet restrained open back moment. I would frankly kill to wear this dress for any occasion, to hell with the appearance of nipples.

The details elevate this look to exceptional status, with a simple suite of diamond jewelry including a Tiffany & Co necklace worn upside down. Her short cut gives an air of Audrey Hepburn, completed by the cat’s eye and the pink lip.

Your Honor, I close my case. Add this look to the list of things we owe Anne Hathaway an apology for.
