Jordan Spieth voices fears the Open at St Andrews will be a ‘corner contest’ | European tour

On a day when Cameron Tringale needed just 61 shots at the Scottish Open, Jordan Spieth became the latest top golfer to voice fears that the Old Course at St Andrews has been overtaken by the progress of the equipment.

Tringale’s nine-under par on a calm morning at the Renaissance Club will create only minor undulations. Yet if the hallowed turf of the Old Course is similarly severed at next week’s 150th Open Championship – for which the weather forecast is good – those calling for action against driving distances will have been given fuel for their argument. .

Spieth, who signed for a 68 here, can see the point. “Yeah, I think it could be,” he replied when asked if St Andrews could ever be too easy. “It’s hard for me to say that in 2015 we had so much wind that we couldn’t even play. But I think if it’s like it was this morning here, it’s just a corner contest, really.

“It wasn’t necessarily designed for today’s technology. But I think even a good 10-15 mph would show something. It doesn’t look like we’re going to get any rain, so I think the defense might depend on how fast they play. It could become like Muirfield in 2013 and I think regardless of the wind conditions it would change the golf course dramatically and make it difficult to hold fairways and greens.

Ian Poulter, who won the right to compete here after an arbitration panel ruling, made his way to the 10th tee at lunchtime with fellow rebel LIV Branden Grace. They received no audible reaction from the spectators. It was evident, however, that very few were inclined to follow the duo who accepted the riches of the Saudi-backed breakaway tour.

The same goes for Justin Harding. The South African, who was playing front of the pack in the morning wave, posted a 65. “There are times when it’s a bit uncomfortable,” he said of the backdrop . “I do my best just to play golf.

“It is ultimately what we are. We’re just trying to get out there and make some money off the golf course and put some food on the table. It’s a tricky situation for me, but I just have to make the best of it.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy continued their preparation for the Open with a round at the famous Ballybunion links on the west coast of Ireland. Further confirmation that Woods, who missed the US Open last month through injury, will compete at St Andrews has been provided by his inclusion on the pre-tournament interview schedule.
