Union Saint-Gilloise vs Rangers LIVE: Stream, TV channel, score, teams – Last Champions League qualifications

RANGERS are underway as they return to European action after coming awfully close to famous Europa League success.

Gers were beaten by Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties in Seville after a brilliant run to the final.

And that defeat means they must now negotiate qualification to enjoy Champions League football this season, as Celtic won the Scottish Premiership.

First, they face an unpredictable tie with Union Saint-Gilloise, Belgian runners-up.

The Brussels side finished second in the Jupiler Pro League, just a year after returning to the top flight for the first time in 49 years.

And they have named two England players in their starting line-up – ex-Accrington centre-back Stanley Ross Sykes and ex-Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess.

If Gers win, they will face an extremely difficult tie in the play-off round against PSV Eindhoven or Monaco.

  • Goldson hoping for Champions League return

Rangers defender Connor Goldson spoke in the week about the competition and the strength of the team:

He thinks it’s the pinnacle of football and the place where everyone wants to play. But that wasn’t just the reason I signed my new contract. Champions League football has been on the agenda for the past few years… I think the players we’ve signed this summer, when we play 11 v 11 in training, are by far the 22 players the strongest since I have been involved and we will need them for the coming season.

  • Sands big time

Rangers defender James Sands is from the start today alongside Connor Goldston.

The American struggled to earn regular minutes last season. But in John Souttar’s absence, he has a chance to show the fans what they’ve been missing.

  • McLaughlin gets the green light

Much debate has surrounded who should be Rangers’ first-choice goalkeeper, with Alan McGregor having recently added a year to his contract.

But Bronckhorst gave Jon McLaughlin the No. 1 spot for tonight’s encounter, as he did for the Scottish Cup final.

Much to the disappointment of fans, Ryan Kent will not play for Rangers tonight after suffering an ankle injury.

However, boss Giovanni Van Bronckhorst says the winger could return to the side this weekend.

  • Change of scene

The match was moved from the usual ground of Union Saint-Gilloise, which does not meet UEFA standards. Instead, the competition will be played at the Den Dreef stadium in Leuven.

The hosts will hope the change of venue will mark a shift in form with goalscorers having scored just once in their last three games at Stade Joseph Marien.

Especially considering they’ve scored a combination of nine goals in their two previous visits here.

  • Good evening from Brussels

Welcome to SunSport’s live coverage of tonight’s Champions League qualifying clash between Union Saint-Gilloise and Rangers.

Today marks the first-ever glimpse of Champions League football for the hosts who were runners-up in Belgium’s top tier last season.

Rangers also finished second in the Scottish Premiership alongside a fantastic Europa League run that saw Gers lose on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt in the final.

This is the first ever meeting between the two sides and we’ll bring you some squad news shortly as we prepare for kick-off.
