There is a full year of monthly TikTok “challenges” for schools and this is something parents and educators should be aware of. While this is a reality we all have to face, our kids are online. They are a part of social media platforms, and while these can have benefits like education and connection, there are some pretty big negatives that parents should keep in mind. TikTok is one of the most popular apps right now for young people and adults, but there always seem to be some trends and challenges that are becoming a big hit.

There was a recent ‘slap a teacher’ challenge that parents were aware of, where a student walks up and slaps a teacher and then posts about it online. According to Distractify and HITC, this was just one of the many challenges that are lined up for the year.

RELATED: There’s a ‘Slap A Teacher’ Trend On TikTok, Parents Should Be Watching Out For

Hitting a teacher was the October challenge, and September had the “sneaky lick” challenge, but there’s more for the remaining months of the year. Maybe now is a great time to talk to your kids about these challenges and the consequences that can come with them.

While some of the challenges appear to be typical prank-type behavior (which is always wrong), some of them are more serious and more than one include sexual assault / harassment. We’re going to make a quick breakthrough here. November seems like “kissing your friend’s girlfriend,” followed by hitting the halls and showing your balls in December. The New Year doesn’t get better with “a chest prick” and “school bulletin boards” in January and February.

March and April involve more theft and vandalism, with damage to the cafeteria and “catch eggs” respectively. May involves a day off, and June is the big end when students plan to give the major at school reception. Many of these challenges are serious offenses and can result in suspension, deportation and even criminal charges where appropriate. These are choices that children make that could have serious consequences that will follow them for the rest of their lives. That’s why it’s so important to make sure kids understand that these aren’t fun challenges to take on and that it could impact their college applications and future jobs. With young people wanting their moment “viral” online, this can all seem like their ticket to the big time.

  • Aggravated assaults increased 17% to 1,850 from 1,582.

  • Thefts from vehicles increased 18% to 6,083 from 5,174.

Details: The office, whose creation was officially adopted this week by Atlanta City Council, will oversee funding for violence prevention programs and coordinate other funds for similar programs.

  • According to city council documents, the office would develop strategic plans to reduce violence in the city and coordinate city-wide programs designed to reduce and prevent violence.

  • It will have three employees, a director and two staff members whose position will be funded from the existing budget of the executive office and US bailout dollars.

  • The director will work with Atlanta Police and other departments that have anti-violence programs in place.

  • Office will also apply for grants to support programs aimed at reducing violence.

Recommendations of the Advisory Board issued a call in July for the city to focus on nine initiatives such as cracking down on harmful properties; hiring of 250 additional agents; adding 250 cameras to the city’s Operation Shield network; increase the use of license plate reader technology; and the addition of 10,000 new streetlights by December 2022.

What they say : Dorthey Hurst, a member of the Atlanta Citizen Review Board, said the committee is an “important first step” in addressing violence in the city.

  • The office also allows the manager and staff to focus solely on his mission and could play a role in bringing together the Atlanta Police Force, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office to tackle violent crime. and recidivism, she said.

According to Hurst, one problem that contributes to community violence is the number of guns stolen from car break-ins across the city.

Even when the Office of Violence Reduction is operational, Hurst said it is up to the public to be more proactive in tackling crime in their neighborhoods.

Drug use by youth has neither increased nor decreased during the pandemic – Knopf – 2021 – The Brown University Child and Adolescent Behavior Letter Wed, 06 Oct 2021 00:48:27 +0000

Alcohol use has declined and nicotine use and prescription misuse have increased among 10-14 year olds during the pandemic, according to a study released last week. Overall, the rate of drug use among these young people has remained stable during the pandemic based on repeated surveys of more than 7,800 people aged 10 to 14 conducted between September 2019 and August 2020.

Young people most likely to use substances were those who experienced severe stress, depression or anxiety related to the pandemic, or whose families experienced material hardship during the pandemic, according to the study. Journal of Adolescent Health. The study was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and nine other institutes, centers and offices that are part of the National Institutes of Health, using data from the ongoing study on cognitive brain development of adolescents (ABCD).

“The past year has been difficult and the teens have been through a year of turmoil and stress in [the] precarious space between childhood and adulthood. Recognizing how the stress of the past year translates into substance use has profound implications in adulthood, as alcohol and drug use at these ages is associated with a significantly higher risk of substance use disorders. long-term alcohol and drug use and associated harms, ”said the director of NIDA. Nora D. Volkow, MD, in announcing the study Aug. 24. “Because the ABCD study had previously followed this young and diverse population, researchers were able to make direct comparisons between trends in substance use before and during the pandemic, highlighting the value of investing in research projects. long-term collaborative.

It was previously found that substance use among older adolescents also remained stable, if not decreased, during the pandemic. However, no data existed on the effect of the pandemic on younger adolescents.

To fill this gap, the research team conducted three surveys in the 6 months following the launch of the stay-at-home orders – in May, June and August 2020 – among more than 7,800 elderly ABCD study participants. aged 10 to 14 and their families participating in at least one survey. They assessed the use of alcohol, nicotine products, cannabis and other drugs among adolescents; prescription drug abuse; and many general and pandemic factors that could influence substance use.

The study found that overall substance use in this age group remained relatively stable across all three surveys and occurred infrequently. In the three surveys:

  • 8% of adolescents said they had used a substance in the past 30 days.
  • Alcohol and nicotine use were the most common (3.4% and 3.6% of adolescents, respectively).
  • Rates of prescription drug abuse and the use of cannabis, inhalants or other drugs were low (1.1% of adolescents or less).
  • Most young people reported using a single substance and only 1 to 2 days per month.

The researchers also found that stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms in young people were all positively associated with substance use and that several factors linked to the pandemic increased the likelihood of substance use in adolescents. For example, youth who reported “extreme” stress due to the uncertainty associated with the pandemic were 2.4 times more likely to use a substance than youth who reported “very mild” stress.

“These data suggest that substance use during the pandemic was concentrated among young people from the most vulnerable families, underscoring the need to provide support to these young people and their families,” said William E. Pelham, Ph.D. , University of California. , San Diego, who led the study. “But we also need to look to the future, beyond the 2020 data, to understand how alcohol and drug use will continue to evolve as people return to school and work. By continuing to follow these young people for five or six more years through the ABCD study, we can help determine the full impact of the pandemic on American youth and take care of their health and well-being. “

The authors note that the study does not directly test or explain why the changes in drug use occurred, and further analysis is needed to determine the mechanisms underlying these trends.

The City of Cheshire no longer requires vaccinated employees to wear masks, except for direct interactions with the general public.

Masks remain mandatory in public spaces inside the library, the Yellow House, the Youth Center and the Place des arts due to the large number of people aged 12 and under who visit these facilities and who are not currently eligible for the vaccine, officials said.

Employees who are not vaccinated will also be required to wear face masks at all times, with the exception of working in separate personal workspaces. More information on the city’s mask requirements can be found here.

City officials lifted the mask’s warrant in Colchester on October 1 after speaking with the director of Chatham Health about a decrease in cases. The city says it is abandoning the mandate and encouraging residents to get vaccinated.

Unvaccinated people will still need to wear masks in indoor public places, city officials said. People are always advised to distance themselves socially as a way to reduce exposure and also consider wearing a mask where this is not possible, regardless of your vaccination status. City of Fairfield officials have decided to lift the current mandate for indoor masks with immediate effect and follow CDC guidelines that recommend masks be dewormed indoors and in close contact with others.

First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick said anyone who feels more comfortable wearing a mask indoors should continue to do so. She urged companies to still have the power to require masks for their employees and customers under the governor’s decree.

“I have done my best to guide our city through the pandemic and to make thoughtful and informed decisions for our community. We have all been through a lot together over the past 18 months and the emotions continue to run high. I once again ask our community, please be respectful to each other regarding differences of opinion, because at the end of the day we are neighbors, ”Kupchick said in a statement.

The city of Glastonbury is ending its mask tenure as of Saturday due to a decrease in COVID-19 cases in the region. Glastonbury has moved out of the red zone, although officials say they will continue to monitor data and trends weekly to see if another warrant is needed.

City officials reported that Glastonbury had 12.8 new cases per 100,000 population, which is a decrease from figures the week before. More information is available here.

Rocky hill

The city of Rocky Hill now says that vaccinated city staff working in offices do not need to wear masks. However, masks will be required during in-person interactions with members of the public, as well as in elderly and child care facilities.

Rocky Hill municipal buildings will be open to the public for business, but officials say visitors will need to wear face masks. Previously, municipal buildings were only open by appointment. More information can be found here.

The state’s most recent coronavirus data as of Friday showed a positivity rate of 2.16%. There are currently 237 hospitalizations. For more virus statistics, click here.

Governor Lamont is giving state employees another week to verify that they are vaccinated or agree to undergo weekly COVID-19 tests.

Cheyenne PD takes TikTok’s Devious Licks trend “very seriously” Fri, 01 Oct 2021 20:19:20 +0000

Several schools in Cheyenne have been affected by TikTok’s “Devious Licks” trend in recent weeks, and police say they take it “very seriously.”

The trend, called the School Bathroom Challenge, encourages students to steal and even vandalize school property.

“Students have been breaking soap dispensers at an alarming rate in many buildings,” Johnson Junior High principal Brian Cox said in a Sept. 21 message to parents and guardians.

Police spokeswoman Alex Farkas said “School resource officers are actively working with principals, staff, students and parents to provide education and communication on the seriousness of property crime and sanctions that may result from such activity “.

Farkas declined to say how many sneaky lickers were fined, but said most of the incidents were “petty offenses against juvenile property and disciplinary action was taken at the school level.”
