BEER-SHEVA, Israel, November 22, 2022 – The European Research Council, one of the world’s most prestigious granting institutions, has awarded Professor Jennifer Oser of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev an ERC Starting Fellowship .

Professor Jennifer Oser’s project addresses the question of how people integrate increasingly pervasive non-election political acts, such as protest, into repertoires of participation at the individual level; and how well these different types of political participants are represented. At a time of growing concern about unequal representation in democracies, two contradictory global trends over the past few decades underscore the importance of these issues: a sharp decline in voter turnout, particularly among lower-status groups; and evidence of increased non-voting turnout, especially among higher status groups.

To assess how these trends in political participation affect patterns of representation, Participation and Representation in the Digital Age: Repertoires of Participation in the Age of Unequal Representation The theoretical framework of (PRD) incorporates new approaches to study the links between individuals’ repertoires of participation (i.e., how individuals combine voting, protest, online activism) and outcomes objective and subjective representations.

“My project is motivated by a curious trend in political participation, over the past decades, around the world. We know that voting has declined while non-electoral participation, such as protest, has increased. A primary concern is that these trends can contribute to inequality But, at the moment, we know surprisingly little about this participation-representation nexus, even though we know that more and more people are taking to the streets. new evidence of a worrying decline in democratic functioning, it is an ideal moment to launch this project on participation and representation in the digital age” explains Professor Oser.

By combining an original theoretical framework and methodological innovations, PRD will conduct a unique and comprehensive empirical investigation of the repertoires of participation, with a focus on the mechanisms that can reduce inequalities in participation and representation.

Professor Oser is an Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and Government at Ben-Gurion University in Israel.

His research focuses on the relationships between public opinion, political participation and political outcomes. Specific topics under this general interest include participatory inequality, citizenship norms and values, online political behavior and mechanisms for linking citizen participation and policy-making.

Additional information on Professor Oser’s research is available on his academic website.

ERC start-up grants are highly competitive and offer €1.5 million over five years with an additional €1 million available for start-up costs.

408 researchers were awarded prizes out of nearly 3,000 proposals.

Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said: “We are proud to empower young researchers to follow their curiosity. These new ERC laureates bring a remarkable wealth of scientific ideas, they will certainly deepen our knowledge and some already have practical applications in sight. I wish them good luck in their explorations.

The President of the European Research Council, Professor Maria Leptin, said: “It is a pleasure to see this new group of brilliant minds at the start of their careers, ready to take their research to new heights. I cannot stress enough that Europe as a whole – both at national and EU level – must continue to support and empower its promising talents. We must encourage young researchers driven by pure curiosity to pursue their most ambitious scientific ideas. Investing in them and in their exploratory research is investing in our future.

This grant follows another BGU ERC Starting Grant to Dr Yair Hartman and an ERC Synergy Grant to Professor Ehud Meron and an international consortium.

Regional disparities in parental incarceration rates among Minnesota youth Thu, 17 Nov 2022 18:56:00 +0000

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL (11/17/2022) — New findings from the University of Minnesota Medical School have shown that 17% of young people in Minnesota have had a parent in jail or jail, according to research published in Pediatrics. Children of color, those living in poor households and rural youth have been disproportionately affected.

In particular, the researchers found significant regional disparities. Youth living outside metropolitan areas were more likely to report parental incarceration. According to their findings, 22% of rural youth and 20% of township youth experienced parental incarceration, compared to 16% of urban youth and 14% of suburban youth.

“This work moves the discussion of parental incarceration beyond the ‘mere urban problem’ – especially since the problem is more prevalent in rural communities with potentially more harmful consequences,” said Luke Muentner, PhD, MSW, postdoctoral research associate at the U of M School of Medicine. “By understanding regional differences in parental incarceration, tailored strategies can be developed to address health inequities – by particularly those within remote or under-resourced communities – while simultaneously working towards decarceration in all regions.”

The study used data from the 2019 Minnesota Student Survey of more than 110,000 8th, 9th and 11th graders. More than half of Indigenous youth and more than a third of Black, Latino and multiracial youth who lived in rural communities had had parenting experiences. incarceration. In each region, youth who experienced parental incarceration reported significantly more individual and cumulative negative childhood experiences.

Parental incarceration rates continued to rise in rural communities, despite stabilizing or declining trends nationally and in urban areas. According to the researchers, there are a number of factors driving this increase in rural communities, including:

  • Underfunded legal services;
  • High workloads;
  • Longer periods of detention between arrest and conviction;
  • Lack of diversion program;
  • Limited alternatives to incarceration;
  • Bias in decision-making at all stages of the legal system

“Underlying these regional inequalities are criminal legal policies and practices that unfairly target communities of color, resulting in racial disparities in surveillance, arrest, sentencing and incarceration,” Muentner said. He also noted differences in legal resources and services between urban and rural areas.

Going forward, the research team plans to investigate the specific consequences of regional disparities in child and adolescent health, including assessing differences in health-related outcomes and examining various protective factors. They also suggest further research to understand how young people cope with parental incarceration in order to develop locally tailored solutions that support health and wellness throughout Minnesota.

2022 midterms see more young women registering to vote Fri, 04 Nov 2022 20:42:00 +0000

Polls for the upcoming midterm elections are swinging between which party will win the most seats, but the prevailing sentiment is that the Democrats are in big trouble because of Republican narratives about inflation, gas prices and criminality. ‘Fearing another shellacking, Democrats rush for economic message,’ read a recent New York Times headline for an article that quoted a Democratic pollster expressing concern that summer’s party support was ‘evaporating’. .

The Democratic margin of young women ages 18 to 29 who say they are likely to vote has jumped 9 points from the spring to now. And the most important issue for a plurality of these voters? Abortion.

But while polls show an airtight margin in Tuesday’s election, they generally don’t account for turnout: Young voters registered this midterm cycle at rates matching or exceeding historic 2018 levels, and the concern of young women, in particular to have less bodily autonomy than their mothers and grandmothers, is what motivates him.

But I noticed a reluctance to acknowledge this potential impact. On October 31, the head of elections in Georgia Gabriel Sterling tweeted“The largest age group recorded in Georgia is 18-24 with 853,426 registrants. However, only 65,605 voted. It is 7.68% of the youngest voters who vote.

Follow our 2022 midterm election live blog at from November 7 for the latest real-time results, news and expert analysis.

According to Tom Bonier, CEO of Democratic political data services company TargetSmart, there is a possible explanation for the discrepancy. “Most pollsters asked ‘How are you going to vote?’ or ‘When do you plan to vote?’ and young voters are the ones who say ‘election day’ most often,” he told me. He added: “When you look at the special election on the 19th in New York, the Kansas primary, some of these high-turnout elections we’ve had in the last two months, younger voters were more likely to vote on Election Day than older voters. .”

Despite this encouraging data and the potentially major story it tells, pundits have been reluctant to acknowledge it as a legitimate factor in the midterm elections. It’s what I’ve dubbed the “Hillary Effect”: Pollsters and political forecasters who answered “I’m with her” in 2016 and were mortified when Donald Trump won are afraid to put forward the ability of women to be the decisive variable in an election. He was seen as embarrassing to be a cheerleader for women — especially a specific, polarizing woman — and in turn, the mostly male, mostly white political forecasting establishment found themselves in the middle of year-long gender course correction.

Prior to the Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, voters under 25 made up 21% of new voter registrations nationwide, according to TargetSmart statistics. But since then, their overall share has risen to 26%, and 31% since the beginning of October. Data from the nonpartisan Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University confirms the same trends. “The surge in youth registration was driven by young women,” says Bonier, who was forced to dig into voter registration data after the startling results of the NY Congressional Special Election 19 and the Kansas State primary over the summer.

On the Kansas ballot was an amendment to the state Constitution that would remove language enshrining abortion rights, and the vote was a resounding “no” that crossed parties and genders. But when Bonier took a closer look at the registration data, a more specific story emerged: He found that 70% of Kansans who registered to vote after the Dobbs decision were women with a median age of 23. And in September, after further analysis, he found the data to be predictive of turnout. “In the August vote on abortion rights in Kansas, women under 25 participated at a higher rate than all men (45% to 43%),” he said. .

70% of Kansans who registered to vote after the Dobbs decision were women with a median age of 23.

It was entirely possible that Kansas was a fluke, with Dobbs’ immediate momentum behind him. But after analyzing registration data from across the country since then, he found that the trend was continuing.

“Before Dobbs, there was a negative gender gap among new enrollees under 25, with men outnumbering women by 2 points,” he told me. “In the two weeks since Dobbs, the gender gap among young voters has reversed significantly to 7 points – a change of 9 points. Since then, the gender gap has persisted at a 3 point margin.

The trend held especially true in battleground states: Arizona posted an 8-point gap among new enrollees under 25 immediately after Dobbs. Similarly, Michigan and North Carolina both showed a 9-point gap, Ohio with 11, and Pennsylvania with a 24-point gender gap in registration since abortion rights were been upset, according to data shared with me by TargetSmart.

A recent Harvard Institute of Politics poll found that young voters are even more likely to vote than the national average. “Battleground State polls are far from settled, I don’t know if we’ll see a red wave or a blue wave on Nov. 8 – but we’ll see a Gen Z wave,” said the the institute’s polling director, John Della Volpe, in an email.

While the poll notably found that youth voter turnout is expected to match or exceed 2018 record highs and that these voters prefer democratic control of Congress by 57% to 31%, what intrigued me most was a statistic which matched voter registration data: The Democratic margin of young women ages 18 to 29 who say they are likely to vote has jumped 9 points from the spring to now. And the most important issue for a plurality of these voters? Abortion.

A poll conducted in mid-September by PerryUndem, a nonpartisan public opinion research firm, digs deeper into the mindset of these motivated young female voters. It revealed that 76% of women under 20 “can consider a scenario in which abortion is the best option for them”, and 68% say that “the lack of rights and access to abortion is a big problem in our society. And 81% say the Supreme Court ruling made them think about “losing many freedoms.”

“This shift in policy has affected the thinking of many young women on a fundamental level,” Tresa Undem, co-founder and partner of PerryUndem, told me. “Many have thought about the risk of death if they get pregnant. Dobbs has made many not want to have children. It is who is most personally affected by any reproductive health policy.

If young women show up in the volume they have recorded, their power as an electoral bloc could help protect a nation against the myriad of cultural and socio-economic challenges resulting from a lack of access to health care. abortion. Let’s hope they pull through.

Higher demand for seasonal workers, but employers may struggle to fill positions: report – National Wed, 02 Nov 2022 11:03:03 +0000

Employers may find it harder to hire temporary workers in the upcoming holiday season as growth in job openings relative to pre-pandemic times outweighs those looking, according to a new report.

Indeed’s Holiday Hiring Trends report released Wednesday indicates that seasonal assignments for this winter are up 28% from last year and 40% from 2019 levels.

Meanwhile, the proportion of job seekers looking for seasonal work is up 25% from a year ago, but still just below pre-pandemic levels.

“The combination of stronger demand for seasonal workers and increased interest in job seekers points to a recovery in overall hiring this holiday season, but finding workers will likely be a challenge for some employers,” indicates the report.

That’s similar to the rest of the labor market, Indeed senior economist Brendon Bernard noted.

“Employers have found it difficult to fill positions across the economy, and I think seasonal hiring will be no different this year,” he said.

Employers may need to adjust wages to attract hires or provide schedule flexibility, Bernard said.

“For some individual employers, I think filling those roles is going to be difficult. And so the question is… what are employers doing to differentiate themselves?

It’s a strong comeback after two years of pandemic hiring activity, Bernard said.

“This year we are seeing a bit more of a return to normal,” Bernard said.

The share of vacation jobs in the overall market is 1.3%, not quite pre-pandemic levels but better than in 2021, Indeed said.

Overall, job openings in Canada hit record highs in 2022, signaling a tighter job market, particularly in some sectors.

Seasonal jobs are concentrated in the retail industry, according to Indeed, such as salespeople and customer service representatives. About half of this year’s seasonal assignments are in customer-facing retail positions, according to the report.

Retail Council of Canada spokeswoman Michelle Wasylyshen said labor shortages are an ongoing problem in retail.

With big shopping events like Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Boxing Day coming up, as well as the Christmas shopping rush, retailers are worried they could increase their workforce, she said.

One thing that Wasylyshen says is contributing to the retail shortage is that there has been a shrinking pool of part-time labor.

“Fewer older people and younger people have returned to work throughout the pandemic,” she said.

Stores that are unable to meet their hiring demands may have to reduce their hours or take other measures to compensate, she said.

UN: 2022 set to be deadliest year for Palestinians in West Bank Sat, 29 Oct 2022 22:36:38 +0000

UNITED NATIONS – The UN’s Middle East envoy says 2022 is set to be the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank since the UN began tracking deaths in 2005, and he called for immediate action to calm “an explosive situation” and move towards the renewal of Israel – Palestinian negotiations.

Tor Wennesland told the UN Security Council that “growing despair, anger and tension have erupted again in a deadly cycle of violence that is increasingly difficult to contain”, and “too many people, mostly Palestinians, were killed and injured”.

In a grim assessment, the special coordinator for the Middle East peace process said the downward spiral in the West Bank and the current volatile situation stem from decades of violence that have wreaked havoc among Israelis and Palestinians, the absence protracted negotiations and the failure to resolve the main issues that fuel the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Wennesland said his message to Palestinian officials and factions, Israeli officials and the international community in recent weeks was clear: “The immediate priority is to work to calm the situation and reverse the negative trends on the ground,” but the goal should be “to empower and strengthen the Palestinian Authority and build toward a return to a political process.”

Over the past month, the UN envoy said, 32 Palestinians – including six children – have been killed by Israeli security forces and 311 injured in protests, clashes, search and rescue operations. arrests and attacks on Israelis. Two members of the Israeli forces were killed and 25 Israeli civilians were injured by Palestinians in shooting attacks, clashes, throwing stones and Molotov cocktails and other incidents during the same period, he said.

Bookings for September top consensus as online world-building platform popular with tweens finds a way to get a little more cash from every user during seasonally low month

Shares of Roblox Corp. headed for their best performance in nearly a year on Monday after the youth-oriented social media platform released figures for September that suggested a turnaround after a year of work.

Roblox (RBLX) on Monday morning reported September bookings and daily active user (DAU) numbers that suggested a better-than-expected trajectory for the quarter, and shares took off. By early afternoon, the stock was trading up 22%, near its intraday high of $43.43, putting it on course for its best one-day performance since November 9. 2021, when the price soared 42% after the company turned growth in October. despite an outage over Halloween weekend. The other most recent big day for Roblox shares was May 12, when shares ended up 19.2%, according to FactSet data.

Roblox estimated bookings of $212-219 million for September, even as a stronger dollar against the euro and the pound adds about 600 basis points to the year-on-year bookings growth rate. on the other.

Cowen analyst Doug Creutz said in a Monday note that September’s performance exceeded its previous estimate of $210 million, putting Roblox on track to top consensus for the quarter despite negative seasonal trends. target audience of tweens returning to school during the month.

Midway through July, August and September, bookings for the quarter would be $695.5 million, just slightly below our estimate of $698 million and slightly ahead of consensus of $690 million. dollars,” Creutz wrote in a note that had some optimism about Roblox despite the analyst’s underperforming rating and $31 price target on the stock.

Jefferies analyst Andrew Uerkwitz, who has a holding rating and a price target of $40, called September bookings “impressive” as the 11% gain was “primarily due to a better than expected monetization per committed hour”.

Roblox reported 57.8 million daily active users, or DAUs, for a 23% year-over-year gain, and 4 billion hours of engagement, up 16% year-on-year on the other. But the biggest payoff came from the amount of money Roblox generated during those hours of engagement.

While engagement was in line with Creutz’s estimate, the analyst said “spend per hour was 5% higher than our expectations” and that daily engagement hours and spend per engagement hour “demonstrated better sequential growth compared to prior year periods”.

Roblox is expected to report third-quarter results on Nov. 7, with analysts polled by FactSet expecting a loss of 30 cents per share on revenue of $692.5 million and bookings of $690.9 million. Earnings reports this year largely disappointed bookings, which the company defines as “revenue plus the change in deferred revenue during the period and other non-cash adjustments.”

“Reservations” is important to Roblox because its core business is selling virtual currency on its site which can be considered deferred income, but the metric has largely become synonymous with disappointment at Roblox in 2022.

The stock posted its worst one-day performance since its IPO after reporting weaker-than-expected bookings growth in February, losing more than a quarter of its value in a single trading session, once it has become clear that children once stuck indoors are finding other ways to spend their time as restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic begin to be lifted. In May, Roblox shares came under fire after the company reported an unexpected drop in bookings

Over the past two quarters, the company has seen back-to-back surprise declines in bookings. And stocks fell in mid-September when the August metrics were released, and appeared to do little to inspire investor optimism.

Of the 25 analysts who cover Roblox, 12 have buy ratings, eight have hold ratings, and five have sell ratings, along with an average target price of $42. With Monday’s gains, Roblox shares are down nearly 60% for the year, compared to a 23% drop in the S&P 500 index and a 32% drop in the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index. .
